We, the undersigned members of the Nontheist Friends (Quaker) Contemplative Sharing Group, stand united in our commitment to the principles of equality, integrity, and the worth of every person. Guided by these fundamental values which stand in accord with the United States Constitution, we strongly oppose the unconstitutional actions taken by President Donald J. Trump to circumvent and claim authority over actions and programs instituted by Congress.
Such unconstitutional executive orders include, but are not limited to, withholding funds from congressionally approved programs, denying birthright citizenship to children born in the United States of America of non-citizen parentage, and denying individuals the right to claim their sexual orientation and gender identity as they see fit.
The President is sworn to uphold and defend the United States Constitution. President Trump is failing in this duty. He takes unilateral executive action, circumventing the process and powers reserved to other branches of government. This is an abuse of power and a violation of the rule of law. We therefore condemn unconstitutional actions by the current administration.
We recognize our responsibility to engage with political issues that impact fundamental rights and democratic principles. While we do not endorse political candidates, we assert our right to criticize policies and actions that violate the Constitution and human dignity.
Because the President has no legal authority to enact these executive orders, we call upon all federal officials to refuse implementation of these illegal dictates. We urge Congress, the Courts, and all defenders of the Constitution to uphold the rule of law and ensure that no administration is allowed to trample upon the rights enshrined in our nation’s founding documents.
See, e.g., U.S. Constitution, Art. I, Sec. 1; Art. II, Sec. 3; 14th Amd. inter alia.
In defense of democracy, integrity, equality, and justice, we stand together.
